The Desk
Design your desk layout in a more
ergonomic manner by dividing it into two separate sections
that allow you to work more efficiently. One section
should be for movable items, while the other is for
stationary items. Stationary items, such as your computer,
are usually large and are necessary for you to do your
job. Typically, you put these items on your desk and
then work around them.
Before setting the stationary items
(such as your computer) on your desktop, make sure that
you have enough room to perform your movable work, such
as writing, in comfort. If your chair is at the right
height and you can comfortably reach your desktop, make
sure that you achieve the following when arranging your
desktop:
- Your computer monitor is about arm’s length away with the top of the screen just
below eye level and the screen tilted slightly upward.
- There is no reflection from outside lighting sources in the monitor screen.
- Your keyboard and monitor are directly in front of you so that you can work without
having to twist your body or turn your head to view the screen.
- You can reach the phone easily.
- You can reach the computer mouse easily.
- Place documents that you use while working on the computer at the same height
as the monitor.
- Illuminate documents that you use while working on the computer to the same brightness
as the monitor.
- You have a work surface for non-computer work that can be reached without twisting your body
or turning your neck.
If your current work area does not meet these ergonomic suggestions, you may want to try
the following:
- Change the elevation of your
computer monitor with old phone books or consider buying a movable monitor stand that lets you move
the monitor out of the way when not in use.
- Tilt the monitor slightly to the left or right to remove glare from external
light sources.
- Use a document holder.
- If your documents look darker than your computer monitor, use a desk lamp to illuminate
them so that they are as bright as your monitor.
- Place your computer on the floor and use a keyboard tray that slides under your desk
to make room on your desk top.
