Feet and Legs

The position and comfort of your feet influence the comfort and ergonomic posture of your entire body.

The different aspects of proper positioning for your lower legs work toward the same goal of maintaining good circulation. When you bend a leg or an arm, the muscles not only move the joint, but the movement also helps push blood through your circulatory system. Because your leg muscles are among the largest muscles in your body, they play an important role in maintaining good circulation.

If your feet do not rest comfortably on the floor but dangle while you sit, you put unnecessary pressure on the back of your thighs. This can constrict blood flow to your lower legs, which can cause your feet to fall asleep. When your feet dangle, their weight also pulls your body forward, causing your back to arch. To counter this, the abdominal muscles in your waist have to work harder to keep your body stable in your chair.

Even if your feet rest perfectly on the floor, you may prefer to sit with your legs crossed or with one leg under you. Although these positions may feel comfortable for a short while, they not only constrict your blood flow, but they may also make you change the angle between you and your work. Working at an angle makes your back muscles work harder to maintain your balance.
